A Healthy Diet Full Of Vegetables

As much as we hate to admit it, a healthy diet full of vegetables is one of the best things we can do for our bodies.  But for the most part, not many people are doing it.  Almost 70% of people still aren’t getting their 5 servings of fruits and vegetables per day.  The U.S Department Of Agriculture recommends that everyone needs to get at least 5 servings to help reduce the risk of stroke, type-2 diabetes and heart attack.

Why A Healthy Diet Of  Vegetables Has Gotten A Bad Name

healthy diet - vegetable medleyGetting enough vegetables in your healthy diet doesn’t classify you as a vegetarian just as driving a lot of miles doesn’t classify you as a race car driver.  It is part of what we should be doing everyday.  I hear people complain that they don’t like vegetables either because of the taste or they never ate them when they were young.  One of the main problems people have is how they cook their vegetables.  They boil them into oblivion until there are no more nutrients or taste left.  You might as well throw them away because they are useless after this.   A healthy diet filled with a variety vegetables will help your body function even better if you give them a chance.

Our whole life we have been told to eat vegetable because they are good for us but it is through this very prodding that many people have  developed an aversion to vegetables.  This is a shame because so many people are missing out on a wonderful and natural source of vitamins and mineral that can heal a host of maladies that we may have.

Just Why Are Vegetables So Good For A Healthy Diet?

Vegetables contain the spectrum of every conceivable vitamin, antioxidant, mineral and fiber known to man.  From the time of the first humans, vegetables have been at the forefront of our healthy diets.  They have a positive effect on both our strength and energy and have been shown to ward off many illnesses and infections.  Most people who eat a rich variety of greens as part of a healthy diet maintain a more youthful and slim appearance.

Perhaps if people knew just how powerful vegetables are they would give them a chance.  Of the top 50 superfoods, over half are vegetables.  This is no accident.  Many of these vegetables contain beneficial amounts of phytochemicals that can repair our DNA, block cancer cells from forming and support the immune system.  What other food can do that!  Other vegetables have healing powers such as preventing the development of prostate cancer and liver disease, detoxifying the liver,  anti-carcinogen powers, preventing birth defects and helping with the cardiovascular system as well as inflammation.  Nowhere else can you find that type of power but in the vegetable.

How To Get More Vegetables Into Your Healthy Diet

If you want the full benefits of vegetables in your healthy diet you will have to change the way you look at vegetables.  Vegetables can be eaten in many different ways.  Obviously, the best way to get the entire list of benefits of vitamins ia by eating them raw but cooking them in a sauce or steaming them are just as good for you.  Including them as part of a healthy diet can have a huge effect on your health.  If you eat them raw, they retain their full vitamin C content which is very important.  But some vegetables actually need to be cooked to unlock the advantageous vitamins they offer.  One of these is tomatoes.  Cooked as part of a sauce it enables you to get the full power of the antioxidant lycopene.  The heat breaks down the thick walls of the plant and releases all the nutrients. Lycopene helps lower the risk of certain cancers, heart disease, and helps prevent macular degeneration which can cause blindness.  Carrots are another vegetables that benefits from being cooked.  It increases the the beta-carotene levels which is then converted in vitamin A.  Finally, calciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and Brussels sprouts produce a compound called Indole which helps kill precancerous cells before they have a chance to turn malignant.

As you can see, vegetables are nature’s proven healers and when you include them in your healthy diet you will be far ahead of the game.
