What Is Black Rice All About?

healthy eating black rice

Move over superfoods, black rice wants to join the club.  If you’ve never heard of black rice, you’re in for a real treat!

Once known as “forbidden rice” because it was only eaten by chinese nobility in ancient China, it is quickly earning its place as the new superfood because of its incredible health benefits.  Research has shown that it contains a vast amount of antioxidants and cancer-fighting properties, even more than blueberries.

Why Is Black Rice So Healthy?

Black rice, like it’s lighter color sibling brown rice, retains the outer bran covering that is removed when making white rice,  is loaded with antioxidants and one in particular, called anthocyanin, can help protect against cancer and heart disease and help in improving memory.  Anthocyanin is found in dark hued produce such as blueberries, blackberries, eggplant and grapes and it is this powerful antioxidant that is responsible for helping to lower cholesterol.

For those who have heart problems, black rice has shown the potential to reduce inflammation which most doctors agree is the the single biggest contributor to a host of medical conditions such as allergies, asthma,  heart disease, cancers, infectious diseases and even Alzheimer’s disease.

Benefits Of Eating Black Rice

Black rice is a whole grain and has a nutty flavor so its very easy to combine with other healthy foods for a delicious meal.  It is filled with minerals such as iron and natural chemicals that have been found to protect us from diabetes because of its low-sugar content.  It has more fiber and vitamin E antioxidants than blueberries and even costs less so it’s easy on the pocketbook.  But it is its heart healthy attributes that really make this a superfood.  Studies have proved that black rice is as powerful as the cholesterol-lowering drug, Simvastatin which makes it a natural low-cost alternative.

Another benefit of black rice is its ability to be used as an alternative to artificial food coloring because it contains pigments that produce many colors ranging from black to pink.  Food colorants have been linked tohealth problems,  behavioral problems in children andcertain cancers.

When it comes to eating healthy, black rice is a great way to add vitamins and minerals to your healthy diet.  Try black rice… you just may be a new convert.
